APRIL ROSEHAUGH MEDAL
For Senior golfers, especially those who have passed
their three score years & ten, there is an incentive for playing in
competitions, the chance to post
a nett score which is below their age, obviously the older one gets the
easier it should become, and so it turned out for a few Senior Fortrose
members playing in the first Rosehaugh medal qualifier of 2004. In the
case of ex wartime Commando Martin McLaren however, he not only
bettered his age by an incredible 16 shots nett, but his gross score of 74
was 3 shots under; all this in conditions that were not conducive to low
scoring, a fierce westerly wind caused havoc with many of the returns,
only eight out of 63 players managed sub par nett rounds, as the CSS of 71
testified.
Martin, who believes in the old adage that practice makes perfect
certainly produced what may turn out to be the round of the season, and
apparently
there is no truth in the rumour that he plays with a "Commando" ball. Alan
Drever, another in the Senior bracket must have thought that he was in
with a chance when he returned a gross 78 (nett 63) in the slighter better
conditions that the morning starters faced, but no one would have forecast a
nett 61 in that wind. Alan however must have been pleased with his form,
he equalled his age nett and was a full 5 shots ahead of the slightly
younger Tom Forbes & the even younger Corin Stewart, Corin did produce the
best scratch score of the day, a par round of 71.
